ROBBO’S 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS #9: Pro Wrestling League (PWL)

We’re on the home stretch now, ladies and gentlemen. As we try and spread the love of Christmas and Australian wrestling all around the country, we find ourselves back in the Sunshine State, Queensland. While we previously covered the little engine that could in Wide Bay Pro Wrestling, today it’s all about…

Day 9: Pro Wrestling League (QLD)

Launching in 2018, PWL is a very well produced fed that boasts the best in Queensland talent. One of the first parts of the process in putting these articles together is seeking some footage to watch, so I can accurately piece together what the promotion is about. It’s all well and good reading websites, social media posts and the like, but the only way to truly get a gauge is to watch the product as much as possible. And damn- the graphics department work overtime as seen in the show intros, the camera is sharp, the audio is crisp and clear, and it’s all available on YouTube for free. So, no barriers to entry at all if you want to become a PWL fan.

One of the centerpieces of PWL is the veteran Rufio, who has recently reinvented himself as Ricky Utomi. I was fortunate enough to see him live for the first time in several years at PWA’s Colosseum event this year, and he was a very different performer to the Rufio I remember- and I mean that in a positive way. Aggressive and impactful, this current version of Utomi is an eye-catching performer that you absolutely want at the top of your card.

At the other end of the experience spectrum to Ricky Utomi is promising rookie Lil Marz. She’s made waves in a very short amount of time, and her charisma is off the charts, as is her obvious passion for wrestling, endearing her to fans nation-wide.

The PWL roster as a whole displays QLD wrestling proudly, with a number of the same top tier performers we saw in our look at Wide Bay a few days ago. Names like Mitch Ryder, Bobby Bishop, Yeet Stevens and Kulture all feature in prominent spots. A diverse range of styles and characters, but one commonality the PWL roster shares is the sense of a rugged style. They wrestle hard and do as much as they can to truly immerse the audience in what they’re watching, entertaining them in the most believable way possible.

That brings us to our video for today! A full event, a title vs. career match headlining the show, as Ricky Utomi puts the belt up against popular QLD battler, Outback Adam, who is putting his career on the line. It’s Project Revolution V!

All in all, Pro Wrestling League is a showcase of QLD wrestling at its best, as this event exemplifies. It stands to reason then, that they feature heavily in what will be likely the biggest weekend in Queensland wrestling history, as they promote a Supershow along with Victoria-based Renegades of Wrestling, on the eve of AEW Grand Slam Australia, live at the Eatons Hill Hotel on Valentine’s Day. Come for Will Ospreay, MJF… and maybe Adam “Edge” Copeland?… and stay for Mitch Ryder, Bobby Bishop and the real Rated R Superstar, Lil Marz. From the videos I’ve seen, PWL tend to draw quite solid crowds, and I’m sure they’re looking to out-do themselves with AEW in town.
