ASF Holds First Event In 4 Years
Competitors from around Australia came together at the Sydney Jiu Jitsu Academy in St Ives on Sunday May 14 for the 2023 Oceania Sumo Championships.
The event featured Judokas, freestyles wrestlers, Mongolian Bokh wrestlers and wrestlers from the Australian Sumo Federation. Brisbane local Joel Kindred won the lightweight division, middleweight was won by Bokh wrestler Myagmar Tserenchimed. Caleb Hudson from Lithgow would claim victory in the heavyweight division.
The competition then went to openweight division, which is all weight classes in together, making the biggest and most competitive division of the competition. Caleb Hudson went on to beat Joel Kindred, Dan Bazzana, and then Myagmar Tserenchimed.
A notable competitor on the day was 15 yr. old Charlie who defeated a lot of wrestlers to come second in adult men’s Lightweight.
The event was the first Sumo event held in Australia by the Australian Sumo Federation in 4 years. Results from the event go into consideration for the World Combat Games in Saudi Arabia in October, and The Sumo World Championships in Japan in November
