Kyle Fletcher on AEW and Australia
Lachlan Albert from the Wrestleradio Australia Podcast sat down with Kyle Fletcher and discussed all things AEW and their upcoming Grand Slam event in Brisbane on Feb 15th 2025.
Lachlan: Kyle how ya doing mate?
Fletcher: – I’m good man, thanks for having me.
Lachlan: You are coming back to Australia for Grand Slam, what are you hoping for from that show?
Fletcher: – Dude… I don’t know wha… That’s an interesting question. I don’t know what I’m hoping for, I think I’m just excited more than anything man. I think I’m so so excited to bring two of the things that I love together, I love AEW, I love the company, I love being a part of it and I love the country I grew up in so I think bringing those two worlds together to me is going to be crazy special, I can’t wait.
Lachlan: (Re Mark Davis) What does it feel like to not be on the same page for the first time in that long?
Fletcher: – It’s pretty interesting man; I don’t know how I’m feeling right now about it. He was out injured for over a year and I think I have obviously grown a lot in that time, I’m not the same person I was a year ago. I think it would be silly if I hadn’t grown or changed at all in a year. I think it’s hard for him coming back and seeing that. For us to not see eye to eye, I think he’s a bit confused and I think he thinks comes back and thinks “oh I’ll just get the band back together”, I just don’t think we’re there right now. Whether or not that’s a forever thing, whether or not it means he shifts his perspective a little bit, he opens his eyes a little bit, or vice versa I don’t know what the future holds. Right now, I’m kinda just feeling it out and seeing what’s gonna happen.
Lachlan: Does it feel harder to stand out as an Aussie now that the market is becoming flooded?
Fletcher: – I think for a very long it was enough to be the Australian wrestler, it was enough to be like “I’m Australian, there’s no other Australian’s here, let’s just go with that.” that’s cool and it works, but it’s now getting to a point where that’s not quite enough, just having an accent, just being a little bit different, it’s just not quite enough. I think you’ve got to bring more to the table than that and I think I’ve started to realize that with this whole new direction I’m going in and everything. I think it’s a good thing, I think it’s a necessary thing, I don’t want people to just be the “Australian wrestler”, I don’t want that to be their defining factor. I think all the Australian’s even further afield have done a very good job of that. I think it’s the best way forward for sure.
Lachlan: Do you have time to keep up with the Australian wrestling scene while working with AEW?
Fletcher: – Yeah, I do for sure, I wouldn’t say I’m able to keep up with every single show front to back, but I try to at least keep tabs on PWA for sure. I have a lot of friends there still, so I like to see what they’re doing. To me, it is so cool… I mean being a part of that boom, having those couple of matches with the Velocities that kind of went super viral was really cool, but watching it from afar has been just as special to me. Seeing people flourish and people that you love doing well it’s just awesome, it’s a really cool feeling.
Lachlan: Are there any Aussies you would like to work with?
Fletcher: – I think kind of the biggest one that is right on the precipice is me and Buddy. Me and Buddy have never touched before, never been in a ring before, never been seen on screen together, so I think that is the one that I’m like, I know when that one happens it’s going to be pretty cool and pretty special. So, I’d say that’s probably my one.
Lachlan: Do you feel that tag team wrestling is still a part of who you are, or do you want to have more focus on the single stuff?
Fletcher: – That’s an interesting question. I think with wrestling, you kinda have to roll with the punches a lot of the time, you kinda have to think on your feet and go “oh this is working right now, let’s go this way.” I don’t think a lot of it’s up to me, I think Davis getting injured was obviously unfortunate, but I took it as an opportunity to showcase that I’m just as good own my own, if not better. I think what’s happening with me and Davis now, me and Will now. I think only time will tell whether or not we get back on the same page and run the tag division again. I’m not saying I’m against it; I think we have to work out some of our issues, but I think we would absolutely destroy the tag division and likewise, I’ve always had goals in professional wrestling. I want to be a multi-time world champion, the greatest of all time, and if right now is the time to chase that, then now’s the time to do it. Like I said, I don’t think all of that is entirely up to me.
Lachlan: From the Don Callis Family, who would you tag with against Davis and Ospreay?
Fletcher: – I’m gonna have to say Takeshita. I think I genuinely, when he was part of the G1, I watched all his matches, and I think he absolutely killed it. I would go out on a limb and say he is one of the best wrestlers going right now. Those four people in the ring, I think that’s some fireworks right there.
