REF WEEK: Refin’ Isn’t Easy By Tom Collis (Sarge)
Well, I am referee Tom Collis (affectionately known as Sarge) I’m training at the Relentless School of Pro Wrestling under Big Rig Fox, JXT and Jake Navara.
I wanted a way to study and better understand the nuances and finer details of wrestling. Becoming a referee looked to be the best way. I never intended to wear the stripes for too long, but somehow I just can’t stop. I still get in and help with Ring Crew. Every ref should know the ring inside and out. I have been lucky enough to work locally for Mayhem Pro, Renegades of Wrestling, MXW, Adrenaline Pro Wrestling, and more. I’ve kindly been provided opportunities to work with international companies Heathen Combat from New Zealand as well as ICW/NHB from the US. I absolutely love what I do and am thankful to be a part of the business.
Refereeing isn’t just counting 1,2,3. It’s a referee’s job to draw the line in the sand and establish the rules, you are part of the story and the “law” in that ring. If the heel is continually cheating You must make the crowd believe that they will be disqualified but also knowing when, how and why to react to a spot, If you need to miss a spot ensure you do, it can make or brake a match and your credibility.
Communication is key, knowing if and when to stop a match early is important and ensuring that everyone gets out safely. In a worse case scenario, in my 3 years I have done hundreds of extreme/deathmatches and have had some close calls but everything was good in the long run. Sometimes you have to put safety above the script. Being a great referee is really an underestimated art form but can reward you with some amazing opportunities and memorable moments.
Remember in the end have fun and stay in the moment. “Reffin isn’t easy”
