AEW Week in Review 7/10/24 – 13/10/24
Hello and welcome to brand new AEW Week in Review. In this version I will be bringing you updates from the weekly episodes of AEW programming.
We are going to start things off with the Title Tuesday edition of Dynamite which was coming to you live from Spokane, Washington.
DYNAMITE TITLE TUESDAY 08/10/24
Our first in ring segment of the week brings us Darby Allin confronting Brody King after the King of The Black Throne decided to be the one to answer Darby’s open challenge on Collision. We get a brief rundown of the history between the two men and Darby points out to the fact that he was the one who convinced Tony Khan to bring Brody into AEW.
King makes it known that he wants Darby’s spot in the company, and that he will do anything to take it. Darby brings up the fact that both men have helped their fathers retire and King asks Darby what will happen if he dies on Mount Everest? Who will look after his father then? He says that Darby’s father will need to get a job and that ultimately someone needs to save Darby from himself.
Darby sits in the corner of the ring begging for King to start the fight. Instead, King demands Darby stand up to which Darby complies and slaps King in the face. Brody then lays out Darby and goes to choke him out, but Darby comes back with a rock to the jaw of King which he pulled from the internal pocket of his jacket. King was left bleeding from this attack as the security storms the ring to separate the two men.
In the first match of the evening, the undefeated Collision sensation Hologram makes his Dynamite debut against Komander. If you have been paying attention to Collision you will know that Hologram has become a key player on that brand with his high-flying action and aerial abilities.
Komander and Hologram put on a solid lucha styled match within which Hologram scored the pinfall and remaining undefeated in his AEW career.
After the match, Jake “The Snake” Roberts makes his way to the stage area and RUSH – DRALISTICO & BEAST MORTOS attack both luchador’s.
After a few months of uncertainty backstage on the status of Daniel Garcia in AEW, it looks like tonight we are finally going to get an answer to the question of where his future lies.
Garcia graces the fans in the arena in Spokane and says that he is going nowhere and the proceeds to put all the champions on notice that he is coming for their belts.
As a wrestling fan it is common knowledge that the old tagline of “card subject to change” can sometimes be a commonplace thing. Tonight is no exception as Dr Britt Baker has been removed from the show due to health issues. In her place we get the pleasure of a fatal four way between Willow – Hayter – Saraya & Nyla Rose.
While the match itself was advertised as a fatal four way, Harley Cameron made her presence felt throughout the match and essentially made this a handicap match for Saraya.
During this match we also saw the return of the Bad Girl Penelope Ford who took a chair to the back of Hayter leading to Hayter leaving the match and chasing Ford backstage.
In one of the coolest spots in the match, Harley brings a table into the ring and props it up in the corner for Saraya to use, instead Willow manages to put Saraya through the table with a Death Valley driver and secures the win by pinning both Harley and Saraya and advancing to WrestleDream to face Mariah May for the AEW Women’s World Championship.
After several months on the shelf Jay White made his in-ring return to action this week against Cody Chhun in what turns out to be just a warmup match for what he really wants.
Jay makes easy work of Cody in a quick match and then gets on the microphone making it known that Hangman is just one step on his journey back here in AEW.
Will Ospreay wants answers, and he wants them tonight. He calls out Callis and straight out demands to know if Callis was the one to send Takeshita to the ring last week to mess with the match. Callis tries to beat around the bush, but Ospreay demands that he answers him, and this leads to Callis frustratedly admitting that yes he was the one who sent Takeshita to take care of business.
Callis slaps Opsreay after Will announces that he no longer wants anything to do with Don. Ospreay wraps his hands around Don’s neck and forces him into the corner which instigates an attack from behind from Takeshita. Takeshita and Ospreay battle back and forth for a minute and Kyle Fletcher makes his way out to pull Ospreay off Takeshita.
In the confusion Takeshita hits a german suplex on Ospreay and Callis tries to recruit Fletcher to stab Ospreay in the head with the infamous screwdriver. Kyle gets all up in Callis’s face and throws down the screwdriver and walks away as Takeshita and Callis continue to beatdown Ospreay.
Ricochet hits the ring and makes the save for Ospreay.
Bryan Danielson and Wheeler Yuta have had a hell of a time after the ones they called family betrayed them at ALL OUT back in September. Tonight, the two men team up to take on their former stablemates in Claudio and PAC.
Towards the end of the match Moxley and Marina come out to ringside to distract Bryan and to solidify their BCC unit.
PAC attempts to use the hammer on Bryan but Yuta pulls it from his hand which this allows Bryan to lock in the submission for the win.
After the match Bryan dives out of the ring and takes the fight to Moxley taking him backstage and continuing the brawl. Meanwhile on the apron of the ring, Claudio and Yuta are arguing over the use of the hammer when PAC blindsides Yuta. Marina, PAC lay into Yuta and then hold him in place as Claudio returns to the ring with hammer in hand. Claudio hits Yuta in the stomach repeatedly until Danielson brings Mox back into the arena. Marina takes Moxley out through the crowd and Bryan runs off Claudio and PAC.
AEW WRESTLEDREAM 12/10/24
AEW is well known for bringing the goods when it comes to PPV and this show was no exception to the rule. A rollercoaster of emotions and excitement filled this card from top to bottom. Now that I have that out of the way, there are so many things to discuss including that ending to the show which has divided the internet on their feelings.
Daniel Garcia becomes a sacrifice for MJF and Adam Cole
Remember when I said earlier in this post that Daniel Garcia put the champions on notice? Well here he had come out to confront Jack Perry after Perry attacked Shibata after a successful defense of the TNT Title. However, a certain scumbag had other ideas. MJF has entered the AEW picture once again and has proved that he is still a killer on the microphone.
His only problem though? He seems to have forgotten that someone else was set to return and that was none other than ADAM COLE BAY BAY! Both men made their return at WrestleDream in a wild segment which saw MJF making it known that he found his Dynamite Diamond Ring and also teasing Cole for being a cripple. Little did he know though that Cole is back and ready to go. He rushed the ring and cleared MJF out leaving the Tacoma Dome in a wave of joy.
The problem we have here is that just this past week Garcia confirmed he is back in AEW and now he is at the mercy of a beating from a returning MJF. Which is now also overshadowed by the fact that Adam Cole is back as a babyface. A lot of the discourse online is that the last time we saw Cole he was a heel and people feel like the whole Devil story has led to nothing. My thoughts on this are that since MJF turned heel there is plenty of ways to explain the return of Cole as a face. All he needs to do is come out and say that he knew that MJF was a scumbag, and it was only a matter of time before he turned on everyone, so Cole got in before MJF did.
A no longer United Empire
Another shocking moment came when the relations between Australia and England were once again destroyed like the bails back in 1882 after the Australian’s dominated the English cricket team on their own soil. Only this time the heartbreak took place in the Tacoma Dome.
As Ospreay was set to secure the win and remain our International Champion, the slimeball Don Callis interfered and was trying to cost Ospreay the match. Ospreay would get his hands on Callis, but it would all be for nothing as he is struck from behind and cost the match by his longtime friend, roommate, stablemate and dare I even say it, brother, Kyle Fletcher.
My sentiment here is that I knew this was coming, but I had also hoped that it wouldn’t be the case. I really wanted to see a version of UE in AEW once Mark Davis was ready to return. I am excited to see how this plays out as it feels that Ospreay is losing everything he once had. Of course, Callis is one of the catalysts behind this, but could we possibly see an eventual team up of two of the greatest to ever step foot in the ring in Kenny Omega and Will Ospreay? One thing I do have to say, Kyle is definitely looking jacked, and I am sure we are set for massive things between him and Ospreay in the near future.
The Countdown is over!
Closing out the night we witnessed the end of the fulltime career of Bryan Danielson and the beginning of Moxley’s 4th AEW World Championship reign.
The choke out ending to the match left a lot to be desired after what was a brutal and delivering match between the two veterans of the ring. Danielson showed us all why he will always be in the conversation as one of the greatest to ever do this sport. Moxley gave us a new psychopath storytelling component to his character and this match definitely delivered in the shock factor.
I was in complete shock when the bell rung, and I realized that match and Bryan’s AEW career had come to an end. We barely had a moment to breathe when the BCC vultures hit the ring and circled their prey in Danielson. This led to Private Party and Jeff Jarrett trying to make the save only to be taken out. A little relief came when Yuta and Darby carrying a chair slid into the ring clearing out the BCC. Once again, I had to hold my breath as Yuta rocked Darby with a knee to the face allowing the BCC to once again take control of the ring. PAC and Marina tape Darby to the ropes and force him to watch the destruction of the former AEW World Champion. Yuta is then provided the plastic bag and like any good lacky does, he wraps it around Bryan’s head and suffocates him with it. After leaving Bryan without air, Claudio puts a chair on Bryan’s head and stomps on the back of it effectively attempting to permanently end Danielson.
After this insane assault the face locker room has made their way out to the ring and clear out the BCC and we end the PPV with Bryan being placed on a stretcher and the medical staff tending to him and the faces of AEW looking destroyed.
For the second PPV in a row we have ended the show with Danielson being suffocated. I thought at ALL OUT we witnessed a murder. At WrestleDream we witnessed a complete oblitiration. The end of this show definitely drew the emotions out of me. AEW for me always has this way of making me feel something when they are on PPV and this was no different. Where do they go from here? who will step up and take on Moxley and his crew? I have my thoughts and the end of the PPV secured it in that this will be the build for Darby to become the biggest face of the company and eventually the one to dethrone Moxley and take the AEW World Championship. Let me know your thoughts.
