Mark Davis Injured, Aussie Open Relinquish IWGP Tag Team Championships
Aussie Open’s breakout year has hit a bump in the road, forcing the team to relinquish both the IWGP World Tag Team and NJPW STRONG Openweight Tag Team Championship belts.
During NJPW’S Resurgence event, Kyle Fletcher announced that his tag team partner Mark Davis had sustained and they would be vacating the belts immediately.
This announcement comes just 2 weeks before Aussie Open were scheduled to defend the IWGP Tag Team Titles on June 4th in a Triple Threat Tag Team Match at NJPW Dominion. That match has been switched to a regular tag team match between former champions Bishamon (Hirooki Goto & YOSHI-HASHI) and House of Torture (EVIL & Yujiro Takahashi) for the belts. At this time, no announcement has been made as to which teams will be challenging for the NJPW STRONG Openweight Tag Team Championships.
Fletcher and Davis held the NJPW STRONG Openweight Tag Team Championships in their second reign for 36 days, defending them once against the team of Lio Rush and Tomohiro Ishii. They would then go on to defeat the aforementioned team of Bishamon, Goto and YOSHI-HASHI, to win the IWGP Tag Team Championships, which they held for 43 days, defending them twice, once against the Best Friends, Chuck Taylor and Trent Beretta on AEW Television, and once against fellow Australian sensations Mikey Nicholls and Shane Haste of The Mighty Don’t Kneel.
